Devido à escassez de trabalho sobre as algas perifíticas de ambientes estuarinos na região Nordeste do Brasil, realizou-se o presente estudo sobre as diatomáceas perifíticas. O material estudado foi proveniente de três estações de coleta, previamente estabelecidas, ao longo dos estuários dos Rios Paripe e Igarassu, Ilha de Itamaracá. Nestas coletou-se, mensalmente, durante o período de 12 meses compreendido entre maio/89 a abril/90, amostras de algas fixadas em substratos naturais e artificial.. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que as diatomáceas foram representadas por 63 táxons específicos distribuídos em 39 gêneros e que as melhores similaridades ocorreram entre as comunidades do substrato natural das estações 2 e 3 e entre as do substrato artificial de todas as estações, bem como entre as comunidades dos
substratos naturais e artificial da estação 3.

Because of the scarcity of words about the periphytic algae in estuarine environments in the Northeast of Brazil, it was done the present study about the periphytic diatoms. The studied material was from three stations of collections, previously established, across the estuaries of the rivers Paripe and Igarassu, Itamaracá Island. Here it was collected, monthly, during the period of 12 months from mai/89 up to april/90, samplings of fixed algae in natural an artificial substrates. The resulte obtained showed that the diatoms were represented by 63 infraespecific and infra-specific taxa distributed in 39 genera, and that the best similarities occurred among the natural substrate in the stations 2 e 3 and the artificial substrates of all the stations as well as among the communities of the natural and artificial substrates in the station 3.
