O ciclo de vida de Penaeus schmitti Burkenroad foi estudado em Itapissuma e Tamandaré (Município de Rio Formoso), Pernambuco. A amostragem foi mensal e em cada amostra foram determinados sexo e tamanho dos indivíduos e, nas fêmeas, estádio de desenvolvimento gonadal. Foi encontrado que a postura é realizada a cerca de 20 metros de profundidade, nos locais de pesca marinha. A maior parte das fêmeas em postura tem cerca de 7 meses de idade; poucas se reproduzem novamente, aos 10-12 meses de idade. As larvas se desenvolvem no mar. Os jovens são recrutados na pesca estuarina com cerca de 1,5 mes, durante o ano inteiro, porém em maior número em abril e agosto. O recrutamento para a pesca marinha se dá a partir de 2,5 meses, porém a idade média das fêmeas imaturas nesta pescaria é de 3 meses. Nas pescarias estuarinas ocorrem apenas fêmeas imaturas e em maturação. A idade média da primeira maturação é inferior a 6 meses. No mar, o recrutamento de inverno é mais importante que o de verão e o máximo de produção corresponde aos meses de inverno. Os autores comentam as informações sobre as modalidades do ciclo de vida da espécie em várias localidades.

The life cycle of Penaeus schmitti Burkenroad was studied in Itapissuma and Tamandaré, Pernambuco. The sampling was carried out monthly and for each sample were determined sex and carapace lenght of the shrimps, and, for the females, the stage of gonadal development. The spawning ground lies at 20 meters depth, that is, in the fishing area. The majority of spawning females has the age of about 7 months; some of them mate twice, at the age of 10-12 months. The larvae grows in the sea. The juveniles are fished in the estuary since the age of 1,5 month, all the year round, but it is more intensive in April and August. The recruitment for the marine fishing grounds occurs since the age of 2,5 months, but the mean age of immature females in the marine fisheries is months. In estuarine fisheries all the females are imatures or maturing. The age of the first maturation is inferior to 6 months. In the sea the winter recruitment is more important than the summer one, and the prodution maximum corresponds to the winter. The authors coment the modalities of the species life cycle in several localities.
