Abstract
The flying fish, Hirundichthys affinis is one of the species which is dominant in the catches of the artesanal fishery operating in the district of "Caiçara do Norte", situated in the northern coast of Rio Grande do Norte. The fishery, carried out throughout the year, with higher values from April to August, using sailing boats with a fishing device called "jereré". Studies on the populational dynamics of commercially important species such as H. affinis provides subsidies for future government actions in regulating the fisheries of this species. The specimens were sampled between April of 1999 and April of 2000, totalling 200 individuals. Total length (Lt) in mm and total weight (Wt) in g. were measured and sex was determined by examining the reproductive organs. The plotting of Lt revealed an unimodal distribution of the individuals sampled, with class width of 257.0 to 304.0 mm. A noteworthy
feature is the absence of smaller individuals, due to the capture type, made seeking individuals of commercial value. The structure in Wt presented a range of 108.2 a 196.8g, with medium value of 148.0 g. The relationship Wt/Lt gives a theoretical curve represented by the equation: Wt = 0,0002 Ct 2,4141, (r = 0.80), suggesting an allometric growth for the species (b = 2.4141). The sex ratio was of 1 male:1.15 females, revealing the a dominance of females during the sampling period.
