A pesca artesanal motorizada no Nordeste brasileiro teve início no Pontal do Peba (AL), em 1969, e foi adotada rapidamente por diversas outras localidades desta região. Em 1986, iniciaram-se estudos, através do projeto "Biologia e Potencial de Camarão Marinho", do CEPENE/IBAMA, sobre os aspectos biológicos e pesqueiros do camarão Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, capturados nos estados de Pernambuco, Alagoas e Sergipe. A pesca deste resurso foi realizada por embarcações sediadas ao sul de Pernambuco e na foz do rio São Francisco (AL/SE). Apesar da existência de algumas pesquisas referentes à espécie, até o momento, nenhum trabalho foi realizado no sentido de se identificar o período em que ocorre o seu recrutamento pesqueiro. No presente trabalho, o recrutamento foi observado de acordo com o comprimento médio mensal, no período de 1986 a 1997. Os dados indicam dois picos importantes de recrutamento pesqueiro, em Pernambuco: o principal é em junho e agosto e o
secundário, de janeiro a fevereiro, enquanto na foz do São Francisco, o pico principal é de março a abril e o secundário, entre agosto e setembro.

The motorized artisanal fisheries the Northeast Brazil was first initiated in Pontal do Peba (Alagoas) in 1969 and spread out quickly to several other localities in the region. In 1986 CEPENE/IBAMA started a serie of studies widle the project "Biology and potential of sea prawns", one of which was about biological and fishery aspects of Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, captured in the states of Pernambuco, Alagoas and Sergipe. The fishing fleet which exploits this resource is localized in south of Pernambuco and in the mouth of São Francisco river (AL/SE). Although there are few studies about the species, none has focused on determining the period in which prawns recruit to the fishery. In the present study, recruitment was determined by analyzing the average length for each month in the period from 1986 to 1997. The data shows that there were two important peaks of recruitment to the fisheries in Pernambuco: a primary one in June/August and a secondary peak in January/February. In the São Francisco river month the primary peak was from March to April and the secondary from August to September.
