Este trabalho promove a descrição da estrutura populacional caranguejo-uçá, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763), no estuário do Rio Paripe, Ilha de Itamaracá, litoral norte do Estado de Pernambuco. Entre agosto de 1999 e julho de 2000 foram recolhidos 385 indivíduos, sendo 231 machos e 154 fêmeas, das quais 32 eram ovígeras. Para cada indivíduo amostrado foram determinados o comprimento (CC) e largura (LC) do cefalotórax (LC), e o peso total (P) Também foram analisados dados de salinidade, temperatura da água e pluviometria. A maior freqüência ocorreu em março (10,39%) e a menor em julho (5,19%). Observou-se que os maiores tamanhos e pesos ocorreram em novembro e os menores, entre abril e junho, tanto para machos quanto para fêmeas. Os machos são maiores e mais pesados que as fêmeas. A reprodução da espécie inicia-se em janeiro, e a presença de fêmeas ovígeras estende-se até março.>

This paper aims at providing a description of the population structure of the mangrove crab, Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763), in the Paripe River estuary, Itamaracá Island, Pernambuco State, Brazil. From August, 1999 to July, 2000, 385 individuals were collected, being 231 males and 154 females, out of which 32 were ovigerous. They were identified in relation to sex and biometric measures of width and length of the carapace, and total weight. Temperature, salinity and pluviometric data were analyzed together with the biological data. There was more rain in July and less in November. The highest total frequency of occurrence took place in March (10.39%) and the lowest (5.19%) in July. There were more males than females all year round, except in September, when numbers were equal, and in February when the females were more abundant. The males are bigger and heavier than the females. The reproduction begins in January and ovigerous females were found until March.
